Last night my daughter and I went to a sneak peak of First Man, the Neil Armstrong biopic. On the whole it was good. It is not The Right Stuff or Apollo 13. It felt more like you were seeing his memories. It was fairly subdued in tone, but that fits Armstrong as a person. He wasn’t flamboyant or outgoing. The flying/space scenes were great. I love that they included Gemini as an important time in his life. The acting all around was good. It was interesting to see his relationship with Ed White and Elliot See. I’d recommend the movie, just don’t expect a flag waving fanfare blasting romp through history.

Did they indicate if Armstrong had any input on the movie? Gosling was on Graham Norton last week and talking as if he had an ongoing relationship with Armstrong. I know the movie has had a long gestation , but I wasn’t sure that Gosling had been attached to the project that long.

No. That would be interesting though.

I love Jim Lovell’s stories about Tom Hanks and the production of Apollo 13.

I’ve been nervous about seeing this one. The trailers made it seem a bit melodramatic to me. I was worried Hollywood would hollywood it up and ruin a great real story. Apollo 13 set a really high bar for space program movies. It’s hard to come down from that.

It is melodramatic, but I don’t think overly so. I think it shows Armstrong as a workman like person who was asked to to do something that some people thought was remarkable. He just saw it as getting the job done.

Well, the wife and I are space buffs, so we’ll give it a try regardless.
